Role Title – Health, Safety and Quality Assurance Advisor (Outdoor Education)
Location – National (based from home – Ideally located in the Midlands)
Directorate - Quality
Line Manager – Paul Farmer shared with Joanna Dunn.
This role is part time – 30 hours per week – days to be negotiated
Principal Accountabilities
Quality Policy:
-
To work in accordance with the organisational quality strategy.
-
Create and maintain quality assurance policies and procedures for all services in the activity division.
-
Ensure effective maintenance and ongoing review of all policies and procedures across all activity services.
Auditing and Inspections:
-
Conduct regular visits to activity sites to audit compliance with health and safety regulations, including AALA (Adventure Activities Licensing Authority) standards.
-
Conduct regular visits to satellite activity services to audit compliance with health and safety regulations, including AALA (Adventure Activities Licensing Authority) standards.

Inspect activity equipment and facilities to ensure they meet industry safety and operational standards.
Health and Safety Compliance:
-
Review and assist in the development of risk assessments for activities and equipment, ensuring they are thorough, accurate, and meet regulatory and organisational standards.

Evaluate the quality of local safety procedures, ensuring they are up-to-date, practical, and effectively implemented and monitored.

Identify gaps or weaknesses in safety protocols and recommend improvements.
-
Ensure all activity providers adhere to Health and Safety standards set out in law.
-
Provide guidance on regulatory requirements, including AALA and other relevant outdoor activity standards.
Quality Assurance and support:

Assess the effectiveness and consistency of local operational procedures across service sites.
-
Collaborate with activity providers to standardise procedures where appropriate.
-
Monitor the implementation of recommendations to improve safety and operational quality.
-
Conduct, interpret and implement quality assurance audits.
-
Continually evaluate adequacy of the quality assurance system.
-
Evaluate and analyse audit findings, prepare reports to communicate outcomes.
-
Support and liaise with managing directors, regional managers and service managers to implement action plans.
-
Provide support, coaching and guidance to services in promoting continual quality improvement.
-
Devise procedures for recording and reporting quality data for analysis.
-
Investigate customer complaints and non-conformance issues.
-
Assist in the training, workshops, conferences and forums as required.

Knowledge on governance policy and procedures.
Quality monitoring:

Collect and compile statistical quality data and analyse to identify areas for improvement.

Develop, recommend and monitor corrective and preventive actions.
-
Identify training and development needs within the activity division.
-
Monitor risk management activities.
-
Contribute to organisational and service governance.
-
Present written reports to the Directors of Education and operational staff.
-
Present written reports to the Senior Team.
-
Undertake project work as required and be responsible for the implementation of the outcome of the project.
Support and Advisory Role:
-
Act as the primary point of contact for activity service providers, offering advice and support on best practices in outdoor education and activity delivery.

Assist in training and mentoring staff to ensure a strong understanding of health and safety protocols.
-
Support providers in adapting risk assessments and procedures for new or changing activities.
Reporting and Documentation:
-
Prepare detailed audit reports and recommendations for service improvements, including specific actions to address risk assessment or procedural deficiencies.

Maintain accurate records of inspections, risk assessments, and compliance certifications.
-
Provide periodic reports to management on trends and areas for improvement across service sites.
Legislation and regulation:

Provide professional guidance and up to date advice on all regulatory and legislative changes governing the activity division (AALA, Institute for Outdoor Learning, Paddle UK, UK climbing etc.)

Monitor inspection outcomes and support continual quality improvement.

Assure on-going compliance with regulatory requirements.
-
Ensure all new guidance/legislation is distributed and check compliance.

Work closely with the all other teams in relation to quality and regulatory matters.
Continuous Improvement:

Stay updated on industry trends, regulations, and best practices related to outdoor education and health and safety.

Collaborate with management to implement new processes or standards where needed.

Qualifications
Essential |
A level 2 health and safety qualification or higher (e.g. IOSH Managing Safely). |
Preferable |
A level 3 health and safety qualification (e.g. NEBOSH certificate or equivalent). A fire safety qualification |

This role is a national role and will involve travel however the majority of our activity services are within commutable distance from the Midlands, however there may be overnight stays required to fulfil the role.
