Job Title: Speech and Language Therapist 

Location: Birmingham / Worcester / Gloucester

 

 

Job Purpose

 

To be a core member of the Keys Group education clinical team, providing direct and indirect speech and language therapy input to children and young people who use our Education Services. 

 

To provide consultation, training and support to education colleagues working with children and young people. 

 

To liaise with internal and external professionals and parents / carers as appropriate. 

 

The post holder will work collaboratively with operations and other colleagues across Keys Group to embed high quality speech, language and communication practices, meeting the needs of children and young people who attend our Education Services.  

 

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

 

Clinical 

To be responsible for providing a specialist speech and language therapy perspective in the assessment, care and teaching of children and young people accessing our educational services.  

To provide specialist speech and language therapy input to teams within the designated region, including providing clinical support and advice to professional colleagues and where appropriate, families and other professionals. 

To formulate and oversee the integrated implementation of specialist speech and language therapy treatment and management plans.  

To undertake therapeutic interventions appropriate to the work of the Keys Group, drawing on a range of speech and language therapy evidence based methods, models and tools as appropriate. 

To develop resources and materials as required to support the therapeutic and SEND services to our children and young people.  

 

Training/Supervision

To provide training to schools on implementing and monitoring evidence-based speech and language approaches and interventions.  

To consult with and advise colleagues from other professions on speech and language therapy assessment and treatment methods. 

 

Policy and Service Development 

To participate in meetings concerned with the delivery and development of clinical services and contribute a speech and language therapy perspective as appropriate. 

To contribute as required to the planning and development of operational policies and service delivery through undertaking agreed project work. 

To advise service and professional management on areas of service where issues of speech and language therapy need should be addressed and to take an agreed key role in implementing any required changes. 

To develop and maintain good communication links with Local Authorities, NHS services and other appropriate agencies.  

 

Evaluation/Research 

To remain informed of and critically evaluate current research to support evidence-based practice in own professional work and to contribute this perspective in the practice and development of the Keys Group Services.  

To help to coordinate administration of agreed outcome measures within the designated service/region.  

Following approval from the Governance Committee, initiate and conduct speech and language therapy based research relevant to the care and education of children and young people with therapeutic needs. 


Professional/administrative 

To engage in regular supervision and continued professional development in line with registration body guidelines (e.g. HCPC). 

To work within the Code of Ethics, relevant professional practice guidelines and the professional guidance frameworks of the Health Care Professions Council and other relevant professional bodies (e.g. RCSLT). 

To work within the framework of the policies and procedures of the Keys Group. 

Understanding key principles of equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) on a practice and knowledge level. To promote and support awareness of EDI. To ensure that bullying, harassment and intimidation are not tolerated. 

To be aware of issues relating to the safeguarding of children and young people, and to report any untoward incidents immediately to the appropriate person. 

To be responsible for relevant data collection on work activities, as required, and to maintain a high standard of record keeping. 

To undertake reasonable travelling requirements in order to fulfil the tasks and responsibilities of the role.

Continuously develop professional knowledge and expertise, attending and participating in learning and development events, meetings, conferences, and events to ensure up to date knowledge relevant to the role and service development. 

Attend and participate in regular team and other meetings, both internal and external.

Qualifications 

Degree or equivalent in Speech and Language Therapy. 

 

Professional registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).  

Evidence of specialist clinical training in other relevant areas including trauma informed practice.

Well-developed skills in undertaking speech and language therapy, assessment, intervention and evaluation with young people both in educational and care settings.  

 

Knowledge of the development and application of outcomes measures for multi-disciplinary teams.  

 

Experience of assessment and recommendations relating to use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).  

 

Experience of delivering speech and language therapy in schools. 

 

Experience of writing and delivering training to school colleagues.

Experience of working with children and young people and the adults who work with them / care for them.  

 

Assessment and intervention with people who have a history of developmental trauma, neurodevelopmental needs and social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs, and disseminate conclusions to nonclinical colleagues. 

 

Experience of providing consultation, training and support to other professionals and non-professionals.  

 

Experience of working in multidisciplinary teams.  

 

Experience of working as a qualified speech and language therapist. Ideally 1+years post qualification 

 

A range of post qualification experience, working in a variety of settings including education and residential care.
